Genesis 21:1-10
After reading about the destruction of Sodom in chapter 18, the sad end of Lot in chapter 19, and Abraham's shameful return to the sin of lying about Sarah in chapter 20, it is great to break out in laughter in the beginning of chapter 21. This lesson begins with the birth of Isaac, whose name means "laughter". This promised son was a long time coming, but when he was finally born, he brought immense joy into the life of his family . . . well, with one exception, and his name was Ishmael.
In this lesson, "Isaac and Ishmael," we look at the birth delight (21:1-7), the brotherly discord (21:8-10), and some amazing typology (Isaac as a type of Christ) in a section entitled Bible Depths.
